Eye Disease  |  Kidney Disease  |  Nerve Damage  |  Cardiovascular Disease

Federal funding has supported significant advances in basic science and preclinical research with animal models of diabetic complications. Over the next several years as these fundamental discoveries are translated into therapies, significantly increased funding will be needed for clinical intervention trials to prevent or reverse disabling complications. In particular, opportunities are anticipated for new strategies to treat diabetic kidney disease which is already showing signs of decreasing in the U.S. diabetic population. This disabling complications has the potential to be ended entirely if new, widely-effective treatments can be developed and validated. In addition, novel agents are being vigorously pursued for painful diabetic nerve disease for which very few treatments are currently available. For these reasons, substantial new resources will be required to optimally pursue opportunities related to this goal.
