Private vs. Public Investment
The combination of federal diabetes research funding and private investments through the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has created one of the most effective public-private partnerships focused on disease research and has helped move us closer to a cure than we have ever been, much faster than anyone believed possible a decade ago. We should not allow these investments to go to waste.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Diabetes Research:
A Strong Return on Federal Investment

Year after year, Members of Congress ask what research has been done that represents a strong return on the federal dollar. Type 1 diabetes research is one such field that exhibits promising results.

As Griffin P. Rodgers, M.D., M.A.C.P., Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), testified on June 19, 2007:

  • People with type 1 diabetes are living longer, healthier lives than ever before
  • Prevention efforts are reducing rates of diabetic kidney disease in people with type 1 diabetes
  • Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technologies are helping people control their blood sugar levels
  • Blood tests can predict the risk of developing the disease in relatives of people with type 1 diabetes
  • New clinical trials are underway testing new prevention strategies
