TOPS Friendly Markets is the creator and originator of the well-loved JDRF Paper Sneaker, the symbol of JDRF’s Walk to Cure Diabetes. TOPS created the Paper Sneaker in 1993 to raise money for JDRF’s Western New York Chapter, and it quickly spread throughout the organization. The JDRF Paper Sneaker has become the focus of a nationwide campaign—adopted by both national and local partners of JDRF—that raises more than $10 million a year for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.
TOPS’ 153 supermarkets throughout New York and Pennsylvania provide employees the opportunity to participate in several ways to support JDRF. They are involved in fundraisers throughout the year, including bowling events, sold-out golf outings, spaghetti dinners, and basket raffles. Employees volunteer their time on local JDRF chapter boards of directors and serve on committees to support various JDRF events. The employees and their families also participate in local company walk teams for the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes.
