“Work hard, play hard” is an excellent motto, and now, a handful of children in Tennessee are playing to support type 1 diabetes research. On May 19, the West Tennessee Chapter held a unique auction event, Cottages for a Cure, to benefit JDRF. Six children’s play houses designed and constructed during the spring by local architects and home builders were auctioned at a gala event held at Carriage Crossing, an outdoor shopping center in Collierville, TN.
The event, chaired by local developer and former chapter board president David Halle, was attended by 150 people. The highest bid on a play house was $3,500. A seventh play house was offered as a raffle prize. Raffle tickets are still selling, and the winner will be chosen on July 2. When all is said and done, the chapter expects to bring in more than $30,000 from the event.
On a side note, congratulations to the West Tennessee Chapter, winner of JDRF’s 2012 Chapter of the Year Award! The well-deserved award was presented to Executive Director Trey Moore at the JDRF 2012 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., on June 8.
