JDRF Denmark Makes History at the Athens Marathon

When the city of Marathon, Greece, was attacked by Persians in 490 BCE, and the Grecian army triumphed over the invaders, an Athenian soldier and herald named Pheidippides ran the nearly 25 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory.

On November 11, 2011, runners from across the world gathered in Athens to commemorate Pheidippides’ first “marathon” by participating in the 30th Athens Classic Marathon. Running Team JDRF Denmark, pictured above, joined the historical day in support of JDRF. All nine runners completed the course, and together, their efforts raised $25,000 for JDRF.
