On June 11, the UK affiliate of JDRF made a historic announcement: Her Royal Highness (HRH) Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, has been named the affiliate’s new president. The news falls on the heels of HRH’s visit earlier this year to the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility in Cambridge, where she met with leading type 1 diabetes (T1D) researchers to learn more about T1D and the research funded by JDRF to cure, treat, and prevent the disease. The experience, speaking with not only researchers but also young people with T1D, inspired her decision to take an active role in JDRF UK.
In her five-year role as president of JDRF UK, The Duchess of Cornwall will attend JDRF events each year and will support projects including fundraising appeals to advance T1D research.
“We are truly moved that Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall has decided to become our president,” said Karen Addington, chief executive of JDRF UK. “Her involvement will put type 1 diabetes in the spotlight and demonstrate how this challenging and serious autoimmune condition, which is often overlooked, affects thousands of children and adults across the UK. We’d like to thank The Duchess for her support and very much look forward to working with her in the future.
“I feel sure that her presidency will help more people understand what it is like to live with type 1 diabetes and become involved with the work that we do.”
