After introducing the first-ever Spin to Cure Diabetes event in London in 2009, JDRF UK launched the event across the country this year, inviting spin bikers to race one another during their lunch hour. The fundraising event brought together local businesses and people with connections to type 1 at the heart of city centers in London, Bristol, Birmingham, and Leeds to raise money for research.
The atmosphere at each of the spins was electric. With competitive spirits running high, participants put all their efforts into winning first place in the races. A total of 51 teams took part in the various spins across the UK, some even wearing “fancy dress” costumes. Collectively, the Spin to Cure events raised more than $132,000.
Through its philanthropic arm, the Macquarie Group Foundation sponsored the spin events, with many Macquarie staff taking on the lunch-break challenge, helping to boost money raised.
Another Spin to Cure is planned for members of the Oil and Gas industry in Aberdeen, Scotland in November.
